Am I Bad? Recovering from Abuse

Inside Scoop Live and Reader views present Father Heyward Ewart as he talks about his new book Am I Bad? Recovering from Abuse. Find your way to freedom today! If you were abused or neglected as a child, chances are that you have been your whole life, whether you are a man, a woman, or a teen. Child abuse so mangles the personality that the victim unconsciously attracts abusers throughout the life cycle. Lies about yourself were planted deep in your mind by the abuse, and you still believe them. They are crippling your life! Do you have any of these signs? You have symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Until you understand exactly what the abuse did to you, you cannot get free. You can stay in therapy your whole life and never get a clue, or you can unravel the mysteries once and for all and bring everything to light by reading “Am I Bad? Recovering from Abuse.” “Am I Bad?” is a great resource for victims, therapists, and group work.

Island Life

How do you live without someone who’s been part of your life for twenty years? Jack Holm begins to find out when his wife doesn’t return to their suburban Seattle home after shopping one day.
Reader Views and Inside Scoop Live are excited about chatting with Dorothy Weil. Her book, A Good Woman, is the story of Mary Lou Friedman, a spunky eighty-five year old whose life slides into chaos when she is threatened by local hoodlums and her husband becomes terminally ill. As Mary Lou fights for her family and home, she revisits her past as a wild farm girl, a naïve young bride, an inexperienced mother, and a mature woman discovering her sexuality. Throughout, she copes with the changing expectations and challenges faced by women of the twentieth century, the final hurdle being old age in a world where people live long but receive little respect. Ultimately Mary Lou is stripped of everything she depends on. Vowing to defend her home, she acquires a gun, with tragic results.

Seeing Me Naked with Liza Palmer

Elisabeth Page has big shoes to fill. She's the daughter of living legend novelist Ben Page, and the sister of literary wunderkind Rascal Page, and her career as a pastry chef is decidedly not up to her family's snooty standards-even if she works at the hottest restaurant in L.A. Elisabeth hopes no one will notice that her five-year plan to run her own patisserie has morphed into an eleven-year plan to nowhere. Her personal life is also frozen in time: she's still involved with her family-approved childhood sweetheart, a journalist whose constant jaunts leave her lonely. Enter an exciting career opportunity and even more terrifying, Daniel Sullivan, a beer-drinking basketball coach who is everything her family is not. Addicted to control and bred to criticize, can Elisabeth finally embrace happiness? Only if she has the guts to let others see her naked…and let them love her, warts and all.

Death Takes a Buggy Ride with Ron Yeakley

On a cold, rainy night in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, an Amish man named Jacob Stoltzfus drives his horse and buggy along a two-lane road when a car-full of kids viciously rams the buggy. When he stops to inspect the damage, a man in a pickup truck pulls over and demands Jacob give him the bag he is carrying. When the bandana obscuring the intruder's face slips off, the thief shoots and kills Jacob.

Pennsylvania State Trooper John Lapp, who left the Amish faith fifteen years earlier, is called to the crime scene. He grew up with Jacob and was once in love with the victim's widow, Sallie. The Amish, a religious sect that shuns modern life, do not see revenge and will not assist in finding Jacob's killer. That is, until Jacob's slightly retarded brother, Amos, is charged with the murder.

While Lapp struggles with the disappointments in his own life, his investigation puts him in constant contact with Sallie. He finds himself frequently wondering if he could return to farming and accept the restraints of Amish life or if Sallie would even have him. In his search for the real killer, Lapp sets up a chain of events that reveal the shocking truth behind Jacob's murder.

The Nightmare That Is Public Education: An Expose of What Re

Public education is a nightmare! Incompetence and mediocrity haunt public middle schools, junior high schools, and high schools. Teachers waste valuable classroom instructional time every day, and their teaching methods are grossly ineffective. Knowledge of subject matter is alarmingly inadequate. Parents don’t really know what happens in public school classrooms. They have been hoodwinked by educators to believe that their children are receiving a good education, but they aren’t as substantiated by international assessments.

The Nightmare That Is Public Education educates parents and the public at large about the tragic realities of public schools, challenges both teachers and administrators to improve their teaching and administrative practices and strategies, and boldly offers innovative and controversial solutions to the problems which continue to plague public schools.

Strategies: A Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Jour

It is estimated that 4-8 million people in the United States suffer with Fibromyalgia. Another one million also have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Some statistics state that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia may directly affect 5% of the world's population.

I am one of the individuals in this growing epidemic. In 1997, after a chaotic year of intense medical and psychological testing, I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. I spent much of the last ten years in deep denial feeling alone, confused, frustrated, and angry. It has taken me a great deal of soul searching, but I believe that today I am a better, more centered person because of my experiences.

I've never been someone who dictates advice, so my book provides worksheets you can develop to tailor your personal responses to symptoms and crises. It is the good, the bad, and the ugly of my personal journey that I share with you, my fellow Fibromites. My hope is simple, that you will find solace and renewed hope in my words.

One Last Dance: It's Never Too Late to Fall in Love

After a disastrous first meeting, Morgan, 89, and Dixie, 79, move in together for economic reasons, they agree. But the relationship changes and strengthens as the couple unites to combat illness, scandal and a near-fatal accident. It s also a tale about how insecurities,
humiliations and fears, though long past, can haunt a person throughout his days. Dixie fears intimacy.

Morgan has concealed important details about his divorce, his estranged children, and his lost Chicago banking job. When a grandson whom Morgan has never met, bent on vengeance for past wrongs, invades their lives, he becomes a catalyst, eventually bringing the couple the love and pride they d lost decades before with the loss of their children.

Written with great humor and a deep understanding of the challenges
associated with aging in America, One Last Dance is an inspiration to all

<itunes:summary>After a disastrous first meeting, Morgan, 89, and Dixie, 79, move in together for economic reasons, they agree.

Written with great humor and a deep understanding of the challenges
associated with aging in America, One Last Dance is an inspiration to all
generations, reminding us to live every day and always be in search of
new experiences, regardless of age.</itunes:summary>

"Journey From Head to Heart" is...

*A toolkit for those who are exhausted from solving never-ending problems, working harder and harder and not arriving at the destination where they truly want to be.

*A Map for how to make the journey from head to heart and then integrate the two so that the power of ego is diminished and the Authentic Self can emerge to live and work from the power of the human spirit.

*A Reference book that may be used for many years to come as the
reader meets life s challenges with success that satisfies both the head and
the heart.

Journey from Head to Heart" is exactly that, integrating logic, reason,
emotion, spirituality, recovery, science, and ancient wisdom from a variety
of sources to create a recipe for wholeness. The tools and processes are designed for people who are a little wary of touchy-feely or New Age approaches.

Twin Voices: A Memoir of Polio, the Forgotten Killer

"Twin Voices" by Janice Flood Nichols, provides a unique and timely glimpse into polio, a virus that killed and maimed millions of children and adults during the twentieth century.

In 1953, polio struck DeWitt, NY (an eastern suburb of Syracuse) with a vengeance. In a first grade class of twenty-four students, eight children contracted the disease – one child, Frank Flood Jr., died sixty-one hours after admission to City Hospital; another first grader and her older sister died several years later of complications. Frankie’s twin sister, Janice, was admitted to the hospital on the evening of his burial. Diagnosed with paralytic polio, Janice recovered. She participated in the 1954 Salk vaccine trial, as one of nearly two million “Polio Pioneers.” Today, she remains dedicated to the goal of worldwide polio eradication. Twin Voices tells the story of polio, the disease, and the story of one family’s bout with the killer, in multiple “voices.”

Branchwater by Steven Maus

In the kingdom of Branchwater, the humans have peacefully lived alongside their guardians, the mantliks, for the last seven hundred years. But that changes one morning when they wake up to find a foreign army encamped outside the castle town.

What follows is a gripping story of several young friends human and mantlik and how they come together to survive. Facing an onslaught like no one imagined, the two races must stand side-by-side on the walls of Branchwater, bracing themselves for the future. As the siege commences with lifted shields and drawn bows, the children hide deep inside the castle. It is the young Desirae who wanders through the inner halls and down into the basement. What she stumbles on below the castle could mean either salvation for Branchwater or its destructive end.

My Tour in Hell with David Powell

David W. Powell enlisted for a tour of duty in April 1966 with the US Marines after receiving an imminent draft notice. Believing he would be able to leverage his existing skills as a computer programmer, he never thought all they would see on his resume was his Karate expertise. Even less that he would wind up serving as a Rocket man in the jungles of Da Nang and Chu Lai for a 13 month tour in hell.

In 1989, David eventually recovered through a simple but powerful technique known as Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) and is now symptom-free. Not just for veterans, TIR has since been successfully applied to crime and motor vehicle accident victims, domestic violence survivors, and even children. His story shows what is possible for anyone who has suffered traumatic stress and that hope, healing, and recovery can be theirs too.

Humanizing Madness: Psychiatry & Cognitive Neuroscienc

McLaren's book is the result of thirty years of research in the philosophy of science. In addition it takes each of the major theories in psychiatry and demonstrates conclusively that it is so flawed as to be beyond salvation.

It goes farther, in that the author outlines a model of mental function which both satisfies the essential requirements of any scientific model, and shows how the phenomena of mental disorder can be described in a parsimonious dualist model which leads directly to a humanist form of management of the most widespread form of disability in the world today.

Giving My Heart: Love in a Military Family

" Giving My Heart" is the true story of a New England wife's struggle to find hope and help for a soldier, friend, and lover after his return from Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Before the war, he was an outgoing and affable man with a can-do attitude. After deployment, he returns to Vermont wanting nothing more than to be left alone. In the months after, he begins avoiding family and old friends. He is subject to mood swings, angry outbursts, headaches, trouble sleeping, problems at work, and feels that no one can ever understand his world and what he has become.

Meanwhile, Lisa has sacrificed everything including a marriage of two decades, to be with a man who is no longer interested in relationships with anyone. Her quest to find healing for her friend with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) will take more love, patience, and persistence than she ever knew she had. "Giving My Heart" portrays the legacy of our involvement in the Middle-East from the Persian Gulf War to the Iraq War as one family tries to grapple with what it means. Lisa provides a personal and heart-rending perspective that only a military wife and mother can share.

Into the Silence: The Power of Stillness in Living and Dying

"I was by her hospital bed when the surgeon gave his prognosis of 'about a year.' Mother turned to me. Looking directly into my eyes, she reached gently for my hand, and said, with such simplicity, 'Judith, I'm going to need your help.'"

So begins the remarkable journey of two women. Judith Ashley had long ago emigrated from England to the United States. Her mother, Enid, still lived in Great Britain and was now dying of cancer of the bowel and liver. Separated by distance for virtually thirty years, Judith traveled back to England to fulfill a promise made two decades earlier - to be the primary caregiver throughout her mother's last weeks of life.

In more than fifty letters written to her husband living six thousand miles away, Ashley recounts - with love and unflinching candor - the conscious way in which her mother approached the last year of her life with dignity, intimacy, and grace. The letters also show how Ashley navigated her way through her own chattering thoughts and roller-coaster emotions to help her have access to an inner source of strength and keep her promise. A moving testament to the strong bond between mother and daughter," Into the Silence" beautifully captures one family's enduring spirit.

AIDS Orphans Rising - How You Can Help

The death of parents from AIDS leaves behind little children, often four or five of them, who desperately want to stay together as a family. In the literature, they call them Child Headed Households. Imagine watching your mother and father slowly die before your eyes, leaving you to bury them and then to raise and care for your younger brothers and sisters.

" AIDS Orphans Rising" takes you through the daily lives of these children. What do they eat? Where do they live? How do they survive? What can I do to help? Each chapter provides weblinks to organizations working with these children as well as real solutions, actions that you can take now to help these children not only survive, but succeed. By 2010, there will be 25,000,000 AIDS orphans!

Left alone, they will be uneducated, disenfranchised, and unwanted: ripe candidates for radicalization and exploitation by dictators and terrorists. If good people like yourself do not reach out to these children so they can get love, an education and set up in some profitable enterprise, civilization will deteriorate to a point that you will not even recognize it. This book is an inspiring gem of human caring for human. Particularly, the last chapter is beautiful and inspiring. It is very clearly written, and for the ordinary reader, and yet it is a fully documented scholarly work.

A Broad Abroad in Thailand with Dodi Cross

Dodie Cross was a newlywed American expat who faced far more than a language barrier in her new home. Among the challenges of her move to Thailand: the subtleties of the Eastern Squat Toilet, a near-fatal accident on the Sukhumvit Highway and bladder surgery performed by an inscrutable Thai doctor who decided to restore her virginity.

All of these mishaps and more are described with great insight and wit in her new book, "A Broad Abroad In Thailand: An Expat's Misadventures in the Land of Smiles." In the end, it's her unflagging sense of humor that sees Cross through all obstacles: from the first pitfalls and pratfalls in her new land, through times of seemingly insurmountable problems.

The Call to Shakabaz brings black characters to fantasy book

An imaginative fantasy adventure, The Call to Shakabaz sidesteps many of the usual conventions of the genre and offers instead unusual and original resolutions to a variety of sticky situations. When the recently orphaned Goodacre children are transported to the land of Faracadar, they must discover and develop their special gifts and talents, which require that they exercise ingenuity, creativity, and compassion.

Fourteen-year-old Doshmisi and her younger siblings Denzel, Maia, and Sonjay are given the task of retrieving the powerful Staff of Shakabaz from the evil enchanter Sissrath. They travel through a colorful landscape with their Faracadaran guide, fifteen-year-old Jasper, and their Aunt Alice s clever, pesky, and often hilarious parrot, Bayard Rustin. The adventurers must contend with many obstacles and foes, including a giant sea serpent spewing green goo, skeeter birds with uncanny eyesight, the smelliest man in the land (named Compost), the deadly mountain geebachings (who cause their victims to laugh themselves to death), as well as Sissrath himself and his minions (who shoot deadly poison darts at their enemies).

Assistance is provided to them along the way by the High Chief and his clever daughter, talking whales, ancient trees, drummers, inventors, butterflies, wolves, tigers, and the peculiar sprites who live underground in the hills. Author Amy Wachspress has set the story in an African American cultural context, with all brown characters, for a refreshingly different perspective on adventuring in make-believe lands (there are almost no books in this genre with any African American characters in them).

"The Call to Shakabaz" explores a host of difficult and complex issues that today s young people face and challenges readers to reconsider the nature of violence and our relation to it. In the final climactic sequence, young readers learn the fundamental principles of nonviolence as practiced by Dr. King and Mahatma Gandhi. When the last page turns and the dust clears, this book will inspire readers to think and think again.

The Dream Catcher Tour with Paula Buermele

"The Dream Catcher Tour" is an intriguing and sensitive tapestry of tales woven into a delightful novel that reflects the beauty and spirit of women.

While touring interesting places and enjoying new experiences in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, forty-seven women also travel through the prism of time to re-visit favorite memories and share recollections.

The women on the fictional bus are women we all know. They are our mothers, sisters, wives, best friends, neighbors, co-workers. They are related to us by birth, marriage, or shared experience. They are the people we depend on to be there with us as we live our way through the days and seasons and events of our lives. This novel respects the contributions these women make to our lives.

Coinage of Commitment with Rob Costelloe

Wayne and Nancy have separate adolescent experiences that both inspire and confuse the romantic ambitions they feel drawn to. During the turbulent 1960 s, they meet while he is attending blue-collar Drexel, and she is at neighboring Ivy League Penn.

Though irresistibly drawn to each other, they must overcome obstacles posed by the class, financial, and religious differences that separate them, as well as opposition from both families, and later, a twist of fate that will be the cruelest test of all.

Can they reach the goal they seek? Can they overcome time s downward pulling inertia? Soaring and poignant, Coinage of Commitment is dedicated to all those readers who ever wondered, perhaps with whimsy, perhaps with hope, just what is the level that love can possibly reach?

The Sex Ed Chronicles with Stuart Nachbar

Set in 1980, in Central New Jersey, "The Sex Ed Chronicle" recounts a young journalist’s brave efforts to stand up for a teacher’s beliefs in the emotionally charged arenas of sex education and student free press rights in the public schools.

In January of 1980, the U.S. economy is in shambles, Ronald Reagan is beginning his quest to become the country’s fortieth president, and New Jersey is about to become the first state to require sex education in all public schools.

New Jersey native Greg Mandell, a rookie reporter for the Ocean Republic, accepts an assignment to cover the Parent’s Alliance for Schools and Teachers (PAST) and the state’s public hearings on sex education. Formed to stop sex education, PAST has influenced the election of three hundred like-minded candidates to school boards across the Garden State .

While on assignment, Mandell falls for Andi Gilardi, a popular history teacher up for tenure at Mandell’s alma mater, Averdell High School . PAST has accused Gilardi of manipulating her students to fight for sex education through the school newspaper and has labeled her a “morally unacceptable” teacher who must be denied tenure. Mandell’s respect and affection for Gilardi forces him to make a choice between his professional objectivity and his personal integrity.

My Journey to Peace with PTSD with Lady Cerelli

What do abusers see when they look at a victim walking across the street that tells them they can abuse the individual? Why do people commit suicide? Why do people have road rage? What does childhood abuse look like in adulthood? How does a PTSD victim describe what is going on inside of them? What is the human element that would turn a trauma into a life experience? My name is Lady and I have been diagnosed PTSD.

I had a flashback in 2003 of a violent military rape that I had suppressed for over 40 years. I was also sexually abused as a child. Counseling for over 40 years, I never dreamed I would have to walk the same path I led my clients on. If I could have had something in my hand to act as a lifeline, it would have gone a long way toward giving me hope. My strength, my therapist and my friends were what helped me to go back to the original pain and connect the dots in my life to the present. To have a lifeline for
